A newly released study reports Orange County is home to 17 of the 25 ZIP codes with the highest burglary rates in Central Florida. This comes on the heels of the biannual FBI Uniform Crime Report that showed Orlando’s overall burglary rate continues to be among the worst in the nation.
Esri, a geographic information service, authored the new study. They ranked all 91 ZIP codes in Lake, Osceola, Orange and Seminole counties to determine an overall crime index. The results clearly show that homes and businesses in Orange County have the greatest likelihood for burglary and other crimes.
With crime at high levels through some areas of the city, many people assume there is little they can do to prevent a break-in. A survey of actual burglars, however, revealed only 12% of burglaries are actually planned, and that burglars quickly move on from a home protected by a security system.
Home security systems, security signs, outdoor cameras and lights have proven to be very effective against stopping crimes at businesses and homes. 60% of burglars say the presence of an alarm system would cause them to completely avoid a home with an alarm, and even burglars who plan heavily would reconsider a home with an alarm system.
While Orlando’s crime rate is decreasing slightly year to year, these new studies illustrate we have a long way to go. Having a monitored security system installed at your home or business can be the best way for you to help take a bite out of Orlando crime.
