At Crime Prevention Security Systems, we’re always interested in our fellow community members’ experiences and opinions – especially when it comes to crime. With that in mind, we recently commissioned a survey to better understand how Orlando residents feel about the safety of their neighborhoods. What we learned was truly eye opening.
The survey was conducted over the course of four weeks (December 12, 2013 – January 3, 2014) by a third party research group. 216 people participated online, providing excellent feedback from a diverse cross-section of Orlando.
The most troubling thing we learned was that nearly half of Orlando residents have been affected –directly or indirectly – by burglary. 47.6% of survey participants reported that they have personally been the victim of a burglary in Orlando or that a friend, family member or neighbor has been.
It’s only natural that would cause many residents to feel uneasy. Add to that our finding that nearly one-fourth of Orlando residents believe crime in their neighborhoods have increased over the past year and it’s no wonder so many people are investing in monitored home security systems.
Besides home alarm systems, Orlando residents apply several tried and true methods to keep their homes safe. 72% of survey respondents said they always remember to lock their deadbolts, 55% said they keep their outdoor lighting up to date and 30% said they have bushes planted under first-story windows. These are all valuable security steps.
When asked what other measures they use to protect their families and property, firearms were by far the most common answers from survey participants. Others promoted the virtues of video surveillance systems. And one person simply answered “prayer.”
While we’re admittedly biased, we know the value of protecting a home with a burglar alarm system. Studies show residential alarm systems are a substantial deterrent to would-be burglars. Criminals like easy targets and will often move on to the next home if they perceive the one in front of them has a security system.
